Fund given a big boost

The Shane Broderick Appeal Fund benefited by £83,802 from the betting turnover at Galway yesterday. The levy on bookmaker turnover on the Galway Hurdle generated £11,739 and the tote £30,162. The Irish Horseracing Authority then matched the total of £41,901 with a donation, and it's reported that the various fund-raising efforts mean there is currently almost £250,000 in total in the fund.

Jockeys and stable staff were among many groups who also contributed to the fund in aid of Broderick, who was paralysed in a fall at Fairyhouse last March.

The publican owners of the Galway Hurdle winner Toast The Spreece, Tony Weir of the Step Inn in Stepaside and Brian Palmer of the Golden Ball in Kilternan, promised to make a "substantial contribution" to the fund as did the horse's trainer, Aidan O'Brien.

Tony McCoy, the British champion jockey who rode Toast The Spreece, contributed £500 to the fund.
