Frost may cause further problems

RACING: Jump racing now faces possible disruption from frost after recently being badly affected by heavy rain. A total of 12 meetings have been washed out this week but just as the deluge appears to have relented sub-zero temperatures forecast for this weekend could cause further problems.

And officials at Haydock will hold a precautionary inspection this morning to determine prospects for this afternoon's meeting. Clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright said yesterday: "We are going to have a precautionary inspection at seven o'clock tomorrow morning because of frost.

"The problem of rain has now receded and it is now as clear as a bell and the worst forecast is for minus three which would be a very close shave. The forecast for tomorrow morning is dry and bright."

Frost could also threaten the meeting at Hereford on Monday and there will be an inspection tomorrow to assess prospects. Clerk of the course Jason Loosemore said: "We are heavy, soft in places at present."

However, there was better news from Fontwell where conditions have improved markedly ahead of Monday's fixture and no inspection is planned. Fontwell's meeting on New Year's Eve was abandoned due to waterlogging.

Following the cancellation of today's scheduled meeting at Sandown, Warwick will stage the Gerrard Wealth Management Tolworth Hurdle at their fixture next Saturday. Racing was abandoned on Thursday at the Esher track due to a waterlogged course.
