Ferrari score a one-two Hungaroring

Giancarlo Fisichella took Jordan's first point in five races at yesterday's Hungarian Grand Prix to cap a day on which Jordan managed to overshadow Ferrari's sealing of a fourth constructors' championship in a row.

Rubens Barrichello may have taken his second victory of the season and Michael Schumacher's second place may have secured another double title win for the Italian team but the clamour at the Hungaroring was all about Jordan.

Earlier on race day team boss Eddie Jordan announced the team had signed a three-year engine supply deal with Ford and that Jordan would carry the blue oval back into Formula One from 2003. Then in the day's main event, Fisichella iced the cake with his fourth point-scoring finish of the year.

Buoyed by an upgraded Honda engine and tweaks to the EJ12's traction control system, the Italian had qualified fifth on Saturday, his best grid slot for nigh on two years and Jordan's best this year. And when Williams' Juan Pablo Montoya bogged down on the dirty side of the track from fourth position on the grid Fisichella swept into the three-point position.

And for the bulk of the 77-lap race it looked like he would present Jordan with their best finish of the year as the tight and twisting Hungaroring, nicknamed Monaco without the barriers, refused to present the following Felippe Massa of Sauber with an opportunity to close on or pass the Jordan.

A well-timed first stop on lap 29 saw Fisichella maintain his fourth place under threat from the hard-pushing McLarens of Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard but when the Jordan number one came in to the pits for a second time on lap 51, Raikkonen and Coulthard were presented with the opportunity to make up time in the run-up to their own second stops.

Those occurred on laps 58 and 61 and when the dust had settled Fisichella was dropped to sixth. The Italian was pleased to hold on to the points, though, and admitted afterwards he could nothing about the pace of the McLarens.

"I am pleased," he said. "I was quite confident today that we might score more points and possibly finish even higher than this but, unfortunately, the McLarens were quicker and we lost a couple of positions.

"The hot conditions don't suit us so well and during the lapping stages I was held up by a Toyota and that lost me some time. Nevertheless sixth is a great result and I'm really looking forward to the next race at Spa as it's one of my favourite circuits."

Team-mate Takuma Sato brought his EJ12 home in 10th to complete a solid result for the Irish team.

Predictably, the sharp-end of the race was all about Ferrari. Barrichello stole pole from team-mate Michael Schumacher on Saturday and maintaining that lead into turn one at the start, controlled a race of few surprises right to the chequered flag.

A one-two finish in any combination was enough to secure the constructors' championship for the Scuderia and a Barrichello victory, his second of the season, had the added bonus of boosting the Brazilian above Williams' Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher in the race for second place in the drivers' title race.

The duo looked secure at all times during the race and in the closing stages effortlessly maintained a 20-second gap back to third-placed Ralf Schumacher.

Juan Pablo Montoya, who had a difficult weekend on his Hungaroring debut a year ago - qualifying eighth and finishing eighth - again had a nightmare race. The Colombian dropped to seventh after bogging down at the start and then dropped to 11th after running wide over the kerbs and into the gravel during a tussle for seventh with Raikkonen. He damaged the undertray of his Williams and thereafter he struggled badly with hopeless understeer.

The Colombian later admitted he was in considerable pain with an overworked elbow as he nursed his charge home to an unhappy 11th place.

The remaining points places went to the McLarens of Raikkonen and Coulthard in fourth and fifth respectively, the Mercedes-powered drivers maximising a solid strategy and higher temperatures which brought their tyres into play to jump from qualifying positions of 10th and 11th.
