LAST year Jody Flanagan caused a sensation when he made his striking debut on the Walker Cup team, but it may have been only a fore taste of even better things to come from the talented Milltown player.
Fanagan played some of the best golf of his life when scoring a stunning singles victory for Leinster over former Walker Cup player Garth McGimpsey at the opening of the men's senior interprovincial championships at Mount Juliet yesterday.
The Milltown man was in absolutely dazzling form in the top singles game when he beat Ulster's McGimpsey six and five after 13 holes.
Fanagan reeled off six birdies on the first, third, seventh, eighth, 11th and 13th holes to dismiss the Bangor man, who was in fair form, too, and was actually level par when the match ended.
Fanagan's driving was long and accurate and he was in superb form on the greens. He dropped three putts from over 40 feet and claimed a birdie on the 11th with a 25 foot putt. He generally played to a standard that would have brought a smile to the face of many a professional.
Poor McGimpsey just could not have done any more. His form was good, and against most opponents he could reasonably have expected to have finished two or three up.
