BALLYLIFIN GC have rejected an approach by Nick Faldo to take out a 33-year lease on the club. It is equally clear, however, that the club council are keeping an open mind as far as any future offer from .the reigning US Masters' champion might be concerned.
Two weeks ago, Faldo sent two representatives to the Inishowen Peninsula with a firm offer which was considered by the club council on Monday, November 25th. Describing it as "a first offer", honorary secretary Karl O'Doherty said: "It did not find favour with council, but any future offer would be given due consideration."
The nature of Faldo's interest in Ballyliffin was reported in these columns last Saturday. It now appears that in return for a 33-year lease, he was to clear the club's current debt of about £600,000; have responsibility for the development and upkeep of the two existing courses and build a new clubhouse.
Though O'Doherty remained largely tight-lipped about the situation, I understand that Ballyliffin would welcome involvement by Faldo in their club. But they consider themselves to be in a strong bargaining position and, as such, are prepared to hold out for a higher offer, presumably involving a cash adjustment.
Faldo has been linked with the Co Donegal facility since last May when, with members of his family and manager John Simpson, he made a surprise visit there following the Volvo PGA Championship. Both parties have been in regular contact during the intervening months, culminating in Faldo's offer of November 21st.
