NewsScotland coach Matt Williams has launched a scathing attack on English Premiership clubs for robbing him of some first-team players for the first autumn Test against Australia.

Williams was forced to name two uncapped players in a makeshift line-up with Borders' Scott MacLeod and Scott Gray given the daunting task of facing the Wallabies at Murrayfield tomorrow.

He is furious that England's top sides have refused to let him have his best players - with the likes of Northampton's Tom Smith, Newcastle's Stuart Grimes and Sale's Jason White missing out on the showpiece against the World Cup runners-up. As a result Williams has named a team consisting solely of Scottish-based players.

"I just sit back and see South Africa play Wales at the same time we are playing and their players are playing," Williams said. "We're playing at the exact same time and same day and we don't have our players. I just went back to the chalk board and rubbed our back-row out.

"I think it is a very dangerous precedent that the English clubs can be setting the agenda for an international game.

"You wonder why an English club competition should take precedent over it and I hope it never happens again. I don't agree with it and this just shows that we have got to bring our best players back to Scotland."

The last time Scotland had a full team of home-based players was against Ireland in February, 1995.

Meanwhile England coach Andy Robinson has conceded the inevitable and ruled Jonny Wilkinson out of next week's Test against Canada at Twickenham.

Newcastle outhalf Wilkinson had been due to captain his country, but is sidelined by an upper arm injury.
