GAELIC FOOTBALL DR McKENNA CUP: Derry 2-15 Queen's 0-6:A DOMINANT second-half performance saw Derry cruise to victory over Queen's on an immaculate Celtic Park surface last night in one of the few games to survive the frost.
Queen’s were given the opportunity to get off to the ideal start when they were awarded a third- minute penalty but in front of his home crowd, James Kielt saw his effort saved by Danny Devlin.
Derry started the scoring through Conleith Gilligan but Queen’s responded through a point from Charlie Kielt. Queen’s were looking dangerous but couldn’t make pressure count and paid the price at the other end when Seán Leo McGoldrick’s clipped effort dipped under the bar for a Derry goal on 10 minutes.
Queen’s kept the score ticking over with two more Charlie Kielt frees but both times Derry responded with scores from play through Barry McGoldrick and Declan Mullan to make it 1-3 to 0-3.
Derry stretched their lead to four through a Paddy Bradley point, though their goal lived a charmed life at the other end when Dermot McBride blocked a goal-bound effort from PD Savage.
A late point from Seán Finch reduced the half-time deficit to 1-4 to 0-4.
Queen’s did get the first score of the second half through Niall McKenna but that was the precursor to a Derry onslaught. Peter Graham fumbled a Paddy Bradley point attempt into his own net to open the floodgates.
By the time the students bothered the scorers again Derry led by 2-13 to 0-6 and were out of sight.
