JASON DODD delivered the win critical to Southampton's survival struggle - and condemned Coventry to a bottom three English FA Premiership slot. Dodd's third goal of the season came after only two minutes at the Dell but, combined with a fighting performance, it was enough to lift Southampton out of trap door territory.

It took a dramatic reflex save by goalkeeper Dave Beasant, deep into the second half, to deny substitute Peter Ndlovu snatching a share of the spoils. Ndlovu had replaced John Salako after 62 minutes - and 15 minutes later he was ready to celebrate what would have been a sparkling 20 yard right foot strike. Beasant, however, flung himself left and superbly touched the curling drive against the left hand post and away to safety.

It has left Coventry - they are fighting their 30th season in the top flight - precariously placed with only seven matches remaining.
