DIT 2-13 UCC 1-9: DIT finished the stronger of the two sides at Long Meadows yesterday to book their place in the next round where they will face DCU at home.
The Coleraine team included Stephen Kernan, son of Armagh Manager, Joe, and the centre forward was their top scorer on the day with four pointed frees.
Having levelled proceedings early in the second half, the visitors were still in contention up until the final 10 minutes when DIT landed the vital score through Garry Smyth and Ken Donnelly.
DIT had led by 1-8 to 0-5 at the break with corner forward John Carlton squeezing the ball over the line in what proved to be the final action of the first half.
But following three unanswered points from Coleraine, substitute Ger Kavanagh levelled proceedings for UUC with a fisted goal after a long free from the sideline.
Smyth, who has played on the Dublin under-21s along with fellow DIT forward Declan O'Mahony, put the game beyond UUC's reach with five minutes to go when, taking an inside pass, he slotted the ball home.
That left UUC trailing by four points and DIT, having lost the lead once, did not slip this time with another second-half replacement, Donnelly, adding two points towards the end.
