FAI Cup Quarter-Final ReplayDerry City 0 Cork City 0 (Derry win 5-3 on penalties): IT'S BEEN a good week for Stephen Kenny's Derry City - they won the League Cup on Saturday and last night progressed to the last four of the FAI Cup following a tense night at a wet Brandywell.

Galway manager Jeff Kenna watched from the stands and he will know his side will have to pull out all the stops when facing a confident Derry side in the semi-final.

Sympathy goes to Cork striker Denis Behan who had his spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Gerard Doherty, as Derry were successful with all five penalties.

The result after 90 minutes was a fair reflection of the play with defences well on top. Derry will now move on to Terryland Park in a determined frame of mind having got through this particularly tough replay.

Neither goalkeeper was stretched during that period with both sides failing in the final third of the park. Derry's Kevin Deery had a low shot easily saved by Mick Devine in the 13th minute while Cork's Darren Murphy lashed a shot over the crossbar eight minutes before the interval.

After the break it was more of the same with scoring chances at a premium. Denis Behan drove a shot into the side-netting in the 57th minute while Derry had a long-range effort from Eddie McCallion saved by Devine. The best chance of the game by that stage fell to Cork. In the 66th minute Behan sent Liam Kearney clear but the striker's shot from inside the penalty area was parried by Gerard Doherty.

One minute later Derry created a glorious chance when Gareth McGlynn played Sammy Morrow through and Devine did well to divert the effort over his crossbar.

Ten minutes from full-time Niall McGinn sent substitute Mark Farren scampering forward and his cross was hammered into the body of Cork defender Dan Murray as the home side seemed certain to score. Indeed, it came as no surprise when the game moved into extra-time with defences very much on top.

In the 98th minute Cork could have stolen it when Joe Gamble sent Behan clear but Doherty raced off his line to parry the effort. Derry substitute Thomas Stewart forced Devine into a fine save in the 108th minute after Farren had robbed Murray of possession in a dangerous area.
