Stephen Hamill made a sparkling debut for Britain and Ireland in their biennial clash against the US at Celtic Manor in south Wales yesterday. Hamill (34), from Antrim, won both his matches in partnership with the most experienced member of the side, Russell Weir of Scotland.

At the end of the first day the Americans lead the hosts 4 1/2 - 3 1/2, but with another 18 points at stake the contest is still very much alive.
