The death occurred suddenly in Dublin yesterday of sports journalist Jimmy Meagan. Mr Meagan was aged 61 and had just completed his report on the Ireland-South Africa game at Lansdowne Road for the Sun newspaper where he was rugby correspondent.

A former athletics, soccer and rugby correspondent of the Irish Press, Mr Meagan reported on six Olympic Games during his 25 years with the company.

A son of the late Jimmy Meagan of The Irish Times, he was the youngest of six children, sister Rita and brothers Noel, former sports editor of the Irish Press, Tony, Aidan and Billy.

Mr Meagan is survived by his wife Evelyn, son Jamie and daughters Karen and Sonia. "Ar dheis de go raibh a anam."
