Ireland’s Lara Gillespie has got off to a strong start in the opening two races in the women’s Omnium event at the Track Cycling World Championships in Chile.

The Carlow 24-year-old, fresh from winning gold in the elimination event on Thursday, finished eighth in Friday’s scratch race and followed it up with a ninth-place finish in the tempo race.

Lorena Wiebes was home in first for the Netherlands in the scratch race – a 40-lap mass-start dash to the line – after launching an attack two laps from the finish, with Denmark’s Amalie Dideriksen taking second and Belgium’s Shari Bossuyt in third.

Up next was the 10km tempo race, won Britain’s Jessica Roberts who claimed 24 points. Marion Borras had the second largest tally with 21 points, with Gillespie ninth to add one point to her haul.

The Omnium features four different types races – scratch, tempo, elimination and points – which are completed over one day. The winner is the rider with the most points overall following the four races.
