Golf:Darren Clarke has won his first title since 2008 with a three-shot victory over England's Chris Wood and David Lynn at the Iberdola Open in Spain. The Tyrone man coped best in testing conditions to card a 69.
Overnight leader Wood was seeking the first win of his professional career but slumped to a 76 to drop from seven under to three under.
Damien McGrane was another to go well in the circumstances, carding a 70 to move to level par, one adrift of Shane Lowry who dropped back to one under with a 74.
"It's a bit of a monkey to get off my back after three years not winning so it's good," Clarke said on the European Tour website. "At the same time I feel a lot for Chris Wood -- he's a young guy, a great player and I've been in his position before.
"On a personal note I'm delighted to have played quite nicely today and win the tournament."
Clarke was one of only three players to break 70. Luckily for him it was too little too late for Rafa Echenique and Paul Broadhurst.
The Dungannon man went into the final day four shots adrift of the 23-year-old Wood and had almost wiped out the four-shot overnight lead after three holes, reducing the deficit to one. Last year's European Ryder Cup vice-captain then found the water on the 11th and the double-bogey that followed could have easily cost him dearly.
But Wood encountered several problems of his own on the back nine, carding five bogeys before almost picking up a hole-in-one on the 18th.
With Wood floundering, Clarke showed his experience and picked up successive birdies at the 14th and 15th to wrap up a rather comfortable three-shot victory for his 13th European Tour title.
"(I am) obviously disappointed and gutted," said Wood. "It was an extremely tough day on the course and it was a bit of a grind all the way round."
