British athletics and cycling chiefs have independently begun talks on introducing blood testing to deter drug abuse in their sports. Dave Moorcroft, the former 5,000 metres world record holder who now heads the athletics federation said yesterday: "It is a hugely complicated issue.

"But we must explore the possibility of introducing random and voluntary blood tests, even if it is only initially in the form of research."
