The England cricket selectors gave Michael Atherton a double boost yesterday, naming him as captain for both the test and one-day series against the West Indies in the Caribbean tour which starts in mid-January.
Atherton's appointment meant disappointment for Surrey captain Adam Hollioake who had led England to victory in the recent one-day tournament in Sharjah.
Hollioake, whose younger brother Ben was also named in the one-day squad, has been named vice-captain while Essex batsman Nasser Hussain will be Atherton's vice-captain for the Test series.
David Graveney, chairman of the England selectors, said that Atherton had gained a unanimous vote despite Hollioake's impressive Sharjah record.
England Squad: M Atherton (capt), A Hollioake (vice capt), D Brown, R Croft, M Ealham, M Fleming, A Giles, D Headley, G Hick, B Hollioake, N Knight, A Stewart (wkt), G Thorpe.
