Former captain William Porterfield leaves board of Cricket Ireland

Porterfield previously combined board duties with coaching at Gloucestershire before taking up a new job with Lancashire earlier this month

Former international captain William Porterfield has left his position on the board of Cricket Ireland less than 12 months after taking up the role.

Last May, the former opening batter was announced as one of four new directors taking up a board position. In recent weeks, it has emerged that Porterfield, who played over 300 times for his country, had vacated his role. Porterfield last played for Ireland in 2022.

Earlier this month, Porterfield was announced as an assistant coach at English county side Lancashire.

“We were very sad to lose Porty but he just took up a job as assistant coach at Lancashire,” said Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom. “That is a very tough, busy job so Porty wasn’t able to give the best of himself as a Cricket Ireland board director.

“It’s to his credit that he didn’t want to do the job unless he’s going to do it to the best of his ability.”

Last season, Porterfield combined his role as an assistant coach at Gloucestershire with his Cricket Ireland board duties.

The former captain’s decision to step away from Cricket Ireland came before news of the governing body purchasing two Tesla cars for the use of senior staff became public.
