The Eden Alternative works to transform care environments for older people into dignified homes that focus on quality of life for both residents and staff. Using a low-cost training programme to move nursing homes away from an institutional model of care, the Eden Alternative provides a person-centred model that results in massive improvements in morbidity rates, medication use, and well-being for elders, as well as reductions in staff turnover and expenditure for care providers. To date, Eden Alternative has been implemented in more than 200 care homes across the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia. It is in one Irish nursing home, Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon, with huge success, winning a Taoiseach’s Public Service Excellence Award in 2012. Now, Eden’s Irish country representative is working on the expansion of the Eden network.
