Taoiseach Micheál Martin has led tributes to former Fianna Fáil TD and minister of state Dan Wallace who died on Monday at the age of 82.
Mr Wallace was minister of state at the Department of the Environment twice after serving as lord mayor of Cork, a role he carried out “with immense pride, dedication and joy”, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said.
He died on Monday at Mercy University Hospital in his native Cork following a short illness.
Mr Martin said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of his “dear friend” and former colleague, one who personified the “decency, good nature and fighting spirit of the north side of Cork”.

“Dan was a dedicated public servant who gave almost 25 years of his life to representing the people of Cork North Central in Dáil Éireann.
“First elected in 1982, he was successfully re-elected in every general election until his retirement in 2007 – a testament to the deep trust and respect he earned from his community,” he said.

The Taoiseach described Mr Wallace as a “tireless advocate for the people of the north side of Cork City”.
“His passion for serving his people was unwavering, and he fought relentlessly to improve their lives,” he said.
“Beyond his many political achievements, those of us who had the privilege to work alongside him will always remember his quick wit, his warmth, and the great sense of humour that made him such a pleasure to serve with.”
“My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time. His loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him,” he added.
Mr Wallace is survived by his wife Ethel, their five children, 16 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
