In January 2023, the discovery of a burning car on a busy motorway in the northwest of England, sparked a nationwide search to find runaway couple Constance Marten, Mark Gordon and their baby Victoria.
As we heard in yesterday’s episode, when police finally caught up with the pair, their newborn daughter was already dead. The child’s lifeless body was discovered in an old shed, wrapped in a pink blanket and placed at the bottom of a shopping bag.
While no definitive cause of the baby’s death could be established, last month, following a retrial at the Old Bailey in London, the couple were found guilty of the gross negligence manslaughter of their daughter.

For BBC journalist Helena Wilkinson, who attended the trial every day, it was one of the most astonishing cases she has ever reported on.
