Madam, – Your paper is to be praised for affording space to the some of the younger generation of this country to give their opinions on the current socioeconomic malaise we find ourselves in. However, I must take issue with the view of Andrew Murphy (Opinion and Analysis, November 17th).

He concludes, “those who want to give up and emigrate have bought into the lie that this country cannot change”.

The cold reality facing thousands of graduates this year and next is the dole queue. As a graduate of 2009 who has worked in the developing world during my college summers, I would recommend that Ireland’s unemployed youth spread their wings and broaden their mind abroad, if their circumstances allow it. The experiences and skills they would gain would stand to them and their country, should they choose to return. This is not “giving up”; it is, in fact, quite the opposite. The alternative is to join the lengthening dole queues, waiting for jobs that will not materialise. – Yours, etc,
