Sir, - In reply to Robbie Roulston (June 19th), I would like to make a few points about genetically modified foods.
Firstly, we can feed the world at present, without the use of GM foods. The problem is that extreme poverty has doubled in the last 30 years (UN Least Developed Countries Report). People in the poorest countries cannot afford to buy appropriate food.
Secondly, the vast majority of those who voice concerns about GM foods are not anti-science. They (myself included) are in favour of a precautionary approach to the development of GM products, so that proper and prolonged scientific studies are carried out to ensure the safety and well-being of the entire biosphere.
Finally, green politics can be said to be based to a large extent on scientific reasoning. Who were the first to inform the public and other political parties about global warming? - Yours, etc.,
