Sir, – The reason people in the Midlands are concerned about the introduction of wind turbines (Iain Jordan, March 16th) is the scale of the current proposal (2,500 turbines at a height of 180 metres) and its health implications (high and low frequency noise and shadow flicker).
The Government has announced its intention to undertake a technical update of the guidance on noise (including separation distance) and shadow flicker in the Wind Energy Development Guidelines 2006. Guidelines are not enough.
The wind energy sector must be regulated by legislation. Why not look at Denmark, a country similar in size and population? The Danes are world leaders in wind energy and protection of the environment. In 2012 they revised their Statutory Order on Wind Turbines to include limit values for low frequency noise, the first country in the world to do so. – Yours, etc,
GERALD O’CONNOR,
Ballynacargy,
Co Westmeath.
