Wind turbines and carbon emissions

Sir, – Ailbe Ryan (January 6th) writes that “wind turbines as a renewable source of energy have been one of the most noted success stories in this country in our efforts to reduce greenhouse gases” (January 6th).  Regrettably, even if this were true, the contribution of wind power to reducing our carbon emissions is not much more than negligible. Energy generates 71 per cent of our carbon emissions, and agriculture 29 per cent. On the energy side, wind energy accounted for 4.1 per cent of Ireland’s primary energy requirement in 2015.  Lots of wind turbines do little more than give a misleading impression that we are meaningfully attacking the challenge of reducing carbon emissions. – Yours, etc,
