What’s in a name?

Sir, – I refer to the letter you published recently on the digital Covid certificate (Letters, July 21st). The author was surprised to see Ireland referred to as “the Republic of Ireland” on his certificate.

While the letter’s author is correct that Article 4 of the Constitution names our State “Éire” or “Ireland”, the vaccination certificate’s author can draw some comfort from section 2 of the Republic of Ireland Act 1948 which provides that, “... the description of the State shall be the Republic of Ireland”. – Yours, etc,

TOM POWER,

Cabra, Dublin 7.
