Sir, – Gordon Linney’s perceptive comments (“Thinking Anew”, July 11th) on the life of the Old Testament prophet Amos are noteworthy. How true it is that “upsetting the rich and powerful is a dangerous business”.
Whether in Old Testament times or in modern Ireland, it is essential that that there is a forum where allegations of corruption and wrongdoing can be voiced without fear of ridicule, lawsuits or imprisonment. That is why the freedom to express such views in a responsible manner within the Dáil must be guarded jealously and the role of TDs independent of the party whips be protected.
Long may that freedom of expression continue to be exercised without hindrance for the benefit of all sections of society. – Yours, etc,
DAVID McCABE,
