Sir, – Be green, conserve energy? Not according to Electric Ireland: its new “low user standing charge” (Front page, February 28th means that if you use less than an average of two units a day, you will be charged an extra €4.72 a month.

If you live alone, and money has recently got a bit tight, you think you could cut down on your electricity usage to save a few euro? Think again, Electric Ireland will extract its toll.

So the message is: burn that energy, increase those carbon emissions and to hell with the environment.

The hard-squeezed middle Ireland is being pressed even more. – Yours, etc,
