Sir, – The letter from the national president of the Society of St Vincent de Paul (March 6th) speaks my language as a Labour Party member and reiterates my core beliefs, which are not being implemented by the Labour Party in Government.

St Vincent de Paul is correct in stating that impossible demands are being made on people with average and low incomes and who have virtually no resources left to rectify the economic crisis and fund the austerity programme. That situation is becoming more and more evident recently.

The property tax is the next blow being applied to people who have no more to give to turn the tide of recovery and the Revenue Commissioner’s powers are being quoted by Government in order to put the fear of God into the ordinary compliant taxpayers.

People with real wealth will continue to enjoy the proceeds of their non-productive gains throughout this economic crisis and benefit from the recovery funded by the people who gave the most and who had the least.
