BILLY SHEILL,
Madam, - In response to Dr Gerard Caffrey (October 21st), the issue is not about the hour going back in the autumn, but whether it should be added in the Spring. When the clocks go forward in spring it is "summer saving time"; the clocks go back to "real" time in October.
The orginal proponent of the idea, Benjamin Franklin, did several complex calculations to show how much candle wax could be saved by gaining an hour's evening daylight for seven months of the year. I am sure that Brendan McWilliams will be able to enlighten us further. - Yours, etc.,
BILLY SHEILL,
