A chara, – I am genuinely delighted for the students who obtain a proliferation of A1s in their Leaving Certificate exams, and no doubt this is a tribute to their hard work and application. I do, however, have an issue with the attention that the media give to the recipients of these grades.
Notwithstanding the clinical nature of the exam process, “success” to a large extent is subjective – I am aware of students who received 500-plus points but who were grievously disappointed and yet others who delighted in their 300-plus points result.
Attention should be focused on some of those mid-point range students who have achieved their "success" though diligence and hard work just as much as someone with a sack of A1s. It's so cheesy year after year sticking the top performer on the front page of The Irish Timeswhen there are so many instances of personal exam triumph that do not necessarily venture into the higher point echelons. – Is mise,
