Sir, – Bobby Carty (Letters, September 13th), calls on the Government to increase the minimum age for the purchase of tobacco to be increased from 18 as is currently the case, pointing out that the US Congress, two years ago, increased the age to 21.
2021 would be an ideal year for the minimum age to be raised to 21, adding to the legislation that the limit should be raised by one year every January 1st, as is done in Singapore.
This simple measure would mean that it would be illegal to sell tobacco to anyone born in the 21st century.
The benefits to the health of the nation, to say nothing of the savings to the health budget, would be immense.
