Time to stop checking email?

Sir, – I see that French workers have won the right to stop checking email out-of-hours ("French workers win right to stop checking email out-of-hours", News, December 31st).

In fact, not checking it during “official” work hours would improve productivity too.

Research shows how knowledge workers can be interrupted by email every few minutes and the time taken for them recover to a productive state is much longer.

Knowledge workers, according to a study by management consultants McKinsey in 2012, can spend up to about 30 per cent of their working week managing email.
