Sir, - Cllr Stanley Laing, chairperson of South Dublin County Council, wrote concerning the present problems associated with a certain section of the travelling community in his area (August 21st).
I look forward to the opportunity of discussing with Cllr Laing and fellow councillors in the Greater Dublin Area how best to accommodate and integrate the travelling community.
Litanising alleged breaches of public order by some Travellers does little or nothing to reduce tensions between the travelling community and the general public. It is also surely unwise and unhelpful to publicly support the introduction of discriminatory legislation apparently designed to deal with some Travellers' alleged misdemeanours while also calling on the travelling community organisations to "out" perceived offenders. - Yours, etc.,
