Sir, – As Donald Clarke is so concerned about a single originally English word apparently incorrectly attributed – and spelled – in Irish (“Who will set us free of the bogus Irishness of craic?”, June 22nd), I imagine as a fair-minded journalist he is proportionately concerned about the vast majority of placenames in the country which are really Irish but rendered in (supposedly) phonetic English, a practice which deprives them of all meaning and makes them incomprehensible.
I await with bated breath his diatribe seeking to highlight this fact and have all toponyms on Irish roadsigns and maps rendered in the original, comprehensible Irish. – Is mise,
