Madam, - So the Taoiseach regrets adopting the "daft model" of tribunals - and, sadly, Ministers Cowen and Brennan agree with him ( The Irish Times, April 22nd). I thought Mr Cowen, the Taoiseach-to-be, had made a good start by invoking the spirit of Sean Lemass and Paddy Hillery as an earnest of him and his party returning to the decency of those days, but such is not the case, it seems.
Those oul' tribunals from the British days are a nuisance,
particularly when they uncover the truth. But it is a fact that
previous investigations, such as a Garda inquiry 21 years ago into
planning corruption, yielded nothing. Neither did the climbing of
trees and turning over of stones in North Dublin flush out any
creepy things. - Yours, etc,
BRENDAN CAFFERTY,
Ballina,
Co Mayo.
