Sir, – There are still good people out there. My 94-year-old aunt, who lives alone in Dublin, nearly set fire to her kitchen recently. Her smoke alarm alerted her to the danger but it also caused her stress and near-panic. She went to her hall door and a young man passing by came to her rescue. He removed the burning pan, opened windows and doors and calmed my aunt. As if that wasn’t enough, he returned the next day with a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates to see how she was. He wasn’t even a neighbour, just someone walking a friend’s dog. He certainly made my aunt and me feel good about the human race! – Yours, etc,
MARY FOLEY,
