Sir, - Congratulations to Victoria White for having penetrated the mirror-image of the glass ceiling - the dark-glass curtain (Opinion, November 9th).
Why do new mothers have to discover for themselves, one by one, something that should be obvious? How would the human race have survived, much less acquired so many skills, if parents, especially mothers, did not find that caring for one's own children is its own reward?
A secondary reward is that, in Bronfenbrenner's words, "The child learns from the parent, the parent learns from the child." Involvement with a learning child gives new insights into "education". - Yours, etc.,
Mβire Mullarney, Whitechurch Road, Dublin 14.
