Madam, - Your farewell to D'Olier Street/Westmoreland Street in last Saturday's edition stirred a host of memories.
It correctly described the editorship of the newspaper, prior to the appointment of John Edward Healy (who held the chair 1907-1937), as being somewhat loosely defined.
But we know the names of the four men who were the de facto editors before the great Healy. Dr Frederick Shaw was first. He was succeeded by his brother-in-law and "best substitute", Dr George Wheeler. Wheeler was succeeded by Robert John Scott. Scott was succeeded by Algernon Lockyer.
They too are part of the inheritance and of the great tradition of The Irish Times and they should not be forgotten. - Yours, etc,
CONOR BRADY, Monkstown, Co Dublin.
Madam, - Oh my, O my, not a mention of the doyen of Diarists and drama critics, the late Séamus Kelly. Shame!
I remain a reader nonetheless. Good luck! - Yours, etc,
TOM AHERN, Liffey Lawns, Clane, Co Kildare.
