The Irish economy in a nutshell

Sir, – I trim the garden hedge while I’m in Ireland for the summer.

Last summer I made the sticks and twigs into bundles and put them outside my garden gate in Dunmore East with a sign saying “Free Firewood”.

They disappeared like hot-cakes in two days.

This year I did the same thing but local friends said that it was most unlikely that they would be taken because the economy has improved enormously. Well, in four days only four bundles have disappeared. I’ll leave them for a week but local information may prove to be right! – Yours, etc,
