Sir, – It has been reported that some Independent TDs will refuse to back any government that commits to a referendum on abortion. Fianna Fáil also opposes a referendum.
What are they afraid of? Democracy?
Whether you agree with abortion or not, it is extraordinary that any “democrat” would seek to deprive their fellow citizens of an opportunity to have their say.
No Irish person under the age of 50 has ever voted on whether we wish to have a constitutional ban on abortion in almost all circumstances.
