The Border and the back door

Sir, – Vince Cable writes, “If the British insist on stopping backdoor immigration through Ireland, the Border will have to be manned and people checked” (Opinion, December 14th). Presumably, he is not aware of Operation Gull, a 2011 UK and Ireland initiative operating on both sides of the land border, and the creation of an Immigration Unit in Dundalk by An Garda Síochána which have been highly successful in curbing illegal migration between Ireland and Great Britain through Northern Ireland.

The UK Border Force does not carry out routine immigration checks on travellers (regardless of nationality) arriving in the UK from Ireland. Is Mr Cable suggesting it should? – Yours, etc,

Dr JOHN DOHERTY
