Sir, - With regard to Ken Livingstone's intention to introduce a £5 tax on cars entering London, I feel some consideration should be given to a similar system in Dublin at least.
The snail-like, noise-to-tail, Monday to Friday traffic on many routes have a distinguishing feature in common: having only one occupant, the driver, in 90 per cent of cars.
How many have someone in their office space, who, if not living next door, is en route to, or not far from, their destination. Similarly, how many have friends whose place of work is not a million miles away from their own? With just a little application, I feel sure many of these selfish, unthinking drivers' contribution to rush-hour congestion could be eased considerably with intelligent car sharing.
Those who persist in driving solo should be liable to a tax. - Yours, etc.,
