SUPPORTING IRISH SOCCER

Julian Canny,

Julian Canny,

Sir, - Diarmuid de Faoite (June 22nd) wonders how many of the hundreds of thousands of fans who welcomed back the Irish football team will be supporting Eircom League clubs in the coming weeks. Perhaps the same question could be asked of the FAI and the Eircom League itself.

The FAI's motto is: "We care about Irish football". However, actions, or rather lack of actions in relation to our domestic league, suggest that this is not the whole truth. In recent weeks this country has been at "fever pitch", yet the FAI and Eircom League have done nothing to highlight the fact that the Irish domestic season starts next week. I fear that in the coming months the usual 10,000 diehards will be attending Eircom League games while millions of other people who were so caught up in the hysteria of the past weeks will hardly know our season is under way. - Yours, etc.,

Iveragh Road,
