A chara, - From next May the EU shall have 20 official languages. I was both astounded and amazed that Gaeilge will not be included. Whether we like the language or not, this is an insult to Ireland and an erosion of yet another part of our identity and our heritage. Next the powers that be may take away our natural symbol, the harp and fill us with some nonsense that we need something more sophisticated. Don't be surprised!
How would the countries of France, England or Germany react if their languages were declared useless - null and void?
This may seem trivial to some in Dublin, but to my friends in the Aran Islands and in Dunquin beside the Blasket Islands it is heresy. It is unthinkable that this should be allowed to happen.
What on earth is the Government doing about this atrocity? Is it letting sleeping dogs lie and being bullied into it by the EU?
O'Casey, Yeats and Peig Sayers will turn over in their graves at this wrongdoing. In fact Charlie Haughey if he were Taoiseach would not allow this mindless act to happen.
Neither should we. - Is mise,
