Sir, - Surely, with the laws that exist in the UK for the prevention of incitement to racial hatred, there is a door of opportunity for the republican movement and nationalists in the North.
Republicans, having committed themselves to the new political arrangement and for the present forsworn the policy of violence, are in a position, along with the rest of the nationalist movement, to pursue through the courts the right not to be the target of racially motivated celebrations.
The behaviour in Northern Ireland in the marching season would not be tolerated in any other part of the UK where racial issues are constantly under scrutiny by the powers that be. Certainly everyone on this island should have the right to freedom of religious conviction, which is as fundamental as the right to free speech.
To engage in bashing your neighbour by display is hardly acceptable, as we go into the 21st century. - Yours, etc., Harry Cavendish,
Sandymount, Dublin 4.
