Sea shells on the Great South Wall

Sir, – When considering the replacement of the finish on the East Pier in Dún Laoghaire, the council developed an aggregate which incorporated fragments of sea shells to replace the concrete. This can be appreciated by anyone who walks the pier – the shells being clearly visible adding a varied tone and texture to the even finish.

Perhaps this might offer a sensible alternative to the unpleasant proposal to provide an asphalt finish on the Great South Wall? – Yours, etc, PETER DERBYSHIRE Glenageary, Co Dublin.
