Science or superstition in US

Sir, – Niall O'Dowd (Opinion, October 25th) points out some of the very worrying fissures that American society is currently grappling with.

However, his observation that it rests between “science and superstition” touches the surface of the problem. There are large sections of American society who do not accept the facts of science by asserting “alternative facts of science”.

He states “reality has changed at a head-spinning rate in America”. Unfortunately it is more than that.

People are living radically different realities that cannot be bridged by well-meaning politicians, fuelled by a divisive media industry where science becomes weaponised in a culture war. – Yours, etc,
