Madam, – Once again glaring deficiencies are highlighted by the recent Roscommon incest case. It has been well documented that reform is needed in one of the most sensitive areas of the law ie, the position of the child in the family unit. It surely must beyond dispute that the constitutional presumption that the welfare of the child is best served within the marital unit is null and void.
The Constitution needs urgent reform so as to redress the imbalance. Any recourse to legislation simply ignores the best interests of the child. We are provided with a real opportunity to effect change. Let’s hope our Government rises to the challenge. – Yours, etc,
PÁDRAIG Ó MÁIRTÍN,
