Madam, - I cannot allow the retirement of your political columnist, Dick Walsh, to pass without recording my sincere thanks and admiration. Over many years his column was a pleasure to read - informative, insightful and hard-hitting. Not for him "a handful of silver or a riband to stick in his coat"; the wealthy and privileged were not spared his searing honesty and forthright comment. He will be greatly missed.

Dick's respect for language was a continuing delight: absent was the familiar cliché, split infinitive and sloppy syntax. A wise man with a broad vision, compassion and intellect.

I wish him good health and contentment with family, animals, books and friends - "content to breathe his native air". - Yours, etc.,
