Sir, - I would like to congratulate Vincent Browne on his column "Bombs no substitute for justice" (Opinion, October 9th). Of course, I, too, believe that terrorism has to be fought strongly. Nobody has a right to kill, maim or terrorise. However, I fear that in the reaction to the horrific events of September 11th other atrocities will be committed against innocent people.
I was aghast to hear that the US had bombed a UN Centre for demining, killing four Afghan workers. As a result of this, poor people may be killed or maimed by the mines that could have been made harmless if those workers had the chance to live. This is doubly hard to tolerate when one hears US military personnel say they were very accurate with their targeting.
Also, is it usual to see the faces of suspects of crime shown on TV? I am referring to the faces of the suspected associates of terrorism being beamed onto our screens on Tuesday night. - Yours, etc.,
May Lynam, Ballyloughaun Road, Renmore, Co Galway.
